Butter boards are gone; butter candles are here!
Forget butter boards!
These butter candles add light, ambiance, and butter to any table. This makes serving bread, steaks, and other foods you love in butter an interactive and fun experience. The TikTok butter candle trend is a hit if you like buttery bread, warm butter, and butter boards.
What exactly is a butter candle?
It is precisely what it sounds and smells like: a butter candle. The butter is slowly softened by the light of a food-safe wick placed on the table. Butter candles are usually served with bread, but you can use them with other buttery food. You can dip them in seafood, meats, and vegetables. For pouring, think mashed potatoes, rice, and popcorn. Butter is the best flavor!
Who was the inventor of butter candles?
Butter candles are a modern version of retro-looking tallow candles. These candles are made from beef fat. Tallow candles have been around since Ancient Rome. Restaurants have been serving steak with edible tallow candles. You can drizzle the melted beef fat over your steak or fill it with potatoes. It’s easy to make homemade butter candles for bread. Soozie, the Foodie, made the first version I saw on Tiktok. She served hers with bread. Another one I keep seeing is the SAMO steak butter candle. These two TikTok show you the many ways butter candles can be made.
How to make a butter-scented candle
You can make butter candles in two ways: pouring or hand shaping. Both are good options, but I prefer running because it looks more natural.
Butter candles can be made by hand.
This is the easiest method to make butter candles. Make a wick from food-safe twine. Once the butter has melted, could you place it in a container and let it set? That’s it!
- Heat the butter. Stir the mixture every time the microwave is turned off.
- Create the wick. Dip a piece of food-safe string in the butter and then cut it.
- Place the wick in the mold. Wrap the buttered string around a chopstick or stick and place it over the top.
- Add the butter to the mold. Make sure that the wick is at the center of your candle.
- Allow the candle to set. Keep the butter candle in the refrigerator for at least one hour.
- Light the butter candle and then enjoy. Trim the wick to about 1/4-1/2 inch above the candle. Light the wick with a match or lighter and let the butter melt. You can dip or pour the butter!
Butter candles can be made by hand.
Use soft, spreadable butter. Take your butter out from the fridge and allow it to sit at room temperature for 20 minutes. Place your butter stick in the middle of a piece of plastic wrap. You can use your hands, a rolling pin, or a rolling board to flatten the butter. Place a piece of kitchen string in the middle to make a wick. The plastic wrap can be used to shape the butter into a candle. Set it in the refrigerator to set.
Butter candle wicks
You don’t have to hand-pour or shape the wick, but you will need one that is food safe. I recommend 100% cotton food-safe twine. This is the type you use to tie up chicken and roasts. It can be found in the meat section of a grocery store, or it can be ordered online. It’s safe for food and will not cause any damage when you light your candle. To transform your food twine into a wick, dip it in butter to ensure it holds a flame.
Butter candle molds
Here you can choose to buy either store-bought or homemade. The mold you choose will depend on whether you want a de-molded candle or a freestanding candle. A container candle is best for pouring, and a shallow, freestanding candle is best.
Mold for dippable butter candle
You can choose to use a disposable or reusable mold, depending on whether you wish to remove the candle from its mold. You can make a candle mold using a paper cup. The butter can be cut into small pieces and removed from the paper cup. A cardboard tube can be lined with parchment paper, then taped to the bottom. You can use a small container from your home, such as a ramekin, to make a dippable candle. The butter crock is an excellent choice for dipping butter candles.
Mold for pourable butter candle
You can use any small spout. A tiny cream pitcher worked well for us and was incredibly cute. You can use anything small and pourable. Many minor cream pitchers and espresso pourers are perfect for small jobs. These adorable mini-glass espresso pouring cups have wooden handles.
Butter salted or unsalted.
Most people will recommend salted butter, as that is best for bread. However, you can also use unsalted butter. Just make sure to serve your candle with flaky sea salt. You can use any butter that you like.
