PINEAPPLE PORK HAWAIIAN BURGERS

Om-nom-nom! This is the sound I make when I eat these delicious, rich, flavorful, and easy pineapples Pork Hawaiian burgers. This kind of meal will make you laugh out loud while you eat. You’ll do the comfortable chair wiggle.

Ground pork is a great budget-friendly substitute for ground beef. It also happens to be on special this week! Because it has a mild flavor, it is very flexible. It also makes a delicious and rich burger.

These Hawaiian Burgers were lightened with sweet pineapple, tangy Teriyaki sauce and savory green onion. I also added a little Monterey Jack to give them a richer flavor. These burgers are delicious!

SUBSTITUTIONS & ADD-INS

The Meat While ground pork is the best choice for the Hawaiian theme, you can also use a leaner, ground turkey or chicken if you prefer. Although beef will work, I think the flavor may slightly overpower the other ingredients.

The Sauce I made half of my Homemade Teriyaki Sauce for use in and on the burgers. But there are many other options. You can also substitute homemade teriyaki sauce with a bottle of barbecue sauce or hoisin sauce.

The Buns I was limited in my options for buns at the grocery, but I believe the best choices to match the Hawaiian theme are Hawaiian King Rolls (obvi), Brioche rolls or Sweet Onion Rolls (which I used).

Toppers: I kept my Hawaiian Burgers simple, but you can add in a lot of fun toppings or add-ons if you have the following items: avocado, bacon, French fried onions or jalapenos, or coleslaw.

Prep time: 10 minutes

Cooking Time: 25 minutes

Total Time: 35 minutes

INGREDIENTS

  • 20 oz. Can pineapple slices be diluted in juice ($1.19)
  • 2 green onions, sliced ($0.17)
  • 2 oz. Monterey Jack cheese, shredded ($0.55)
  • 1 lb. Ground pork ($2.50
  • 6 Tbsp Teriyaki Sauce, Divided ($0.29)
  • 1/4 red onion ($0.41)
  • 1 Tbsp of cooking oil, divided ($0.04)
  • 4 Onion Rolls (2.99)

SRIRACHA MAYO (OPTIONAL).

  • 4 Tbsp mayonnaise ($0.41)
  • 1 Tbsp sriracha ($0.09)

INSTRUCTIONS

  • One of your pineapple slices, and cut it into small pieces. Cut the green onions into small pieces and shred the Monterey Jack. In a large bowl, combine the ground pork, chopped pineapple and sliced green onions with the shredded cheese. Mix all ingredients by hand until well combined.
  • Make four patties from the pork mixture. The patties should be flatter and thinner than your final burgers. They will shrink as they cook. Place the patties aside.
  • Slice the red onion thinly. Heat 1/2 cup of cooking oil in a large skillet on medium-high heat. Once the oil and skillet are hot, add the red onion slices. Cook until they become golden brown and caramelized on their bottoms. Let the onions brown once more. It is important not to stir the onions too often as it will hinder the caramelization and browning of the edges. Once the onions have browned well, transfer them to bowls and let them rest.
  • Reduce the heat to medium and add 1/2 Tbsp of oil to the skillet. Stir to coat the skillet before adding the burger patties. The patties should be browned on one side. Next, flip the patties and cook the other side until golden brown. This will take approximately 5 minutes. Cooking times may vary depending on cookware and the size and shape of the burgers.
  • Mix the mayonnaise with sriracha while the burgers cook in a small bowl.
  • Transfer the cooked hamburgers to a plate or cutting board. Four more pineapple rings can be patted dry with a towel and added to the skillet. Cook the pineapple slices on medium heat until they are hot and the skillet is no longer browned. This should take about 2-3 minutes per side.
  • Make a burger by spreading a bit of the Sriracha mayo on a bun. Next, add a cooked hamburger and drizzle another tablespoon of teriyaki over it. Serve with a few caramelized red onions and one of the prepared pineapple slices.
